Throughout July, and with shows in August, September, and October, The Daily Show co-creator and Air America co-founder will take her razor-sharp wit and hilarious spin on current events to audiences in ten cities and nine states – with all proceeds going to benefit local Planned Parenthood affiliates. Winstead was inspired to develop the tour by her long-standing support of Planned Parenthood’s work.
“Women’s health has become the number one target of the radical right – even worse, it has been reduced to a bargaining chip,” said Winstead. “I say enough is enough, and so should anyone who has relied on Planned Parenthood for basic health care, or knows someone who has. Planned Parenthood has been there for me in every facet of my reproductive health, and now I want to be there for them.”
The “Planned Parenthood, I’m Here for You!” comedy tour will raise money and awareness for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. In her inimitable, irreverent, and poignant style, Winstead will share the story of Planned Parenthood’s role in her own life. She promises an evening full of laughter and inspiration at each stop.
“I have this crazy notion that I want to be part of the solution,” said Winstead. “Throughout my life, I have turned to Planned Parenthood for many of my health care needs. Planned Parenthood’s health centers were the only affordable solution. And they were always there for me. My life could have been very different without them. I am grateful. Very grateful.”
“We are thrilled to see Lizz put her energy and passion into supporting Planned Parenthood’s work,” said Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards. “We know she’ll bring a much-needed dose of humor and sanity to every city she visits.”
During her career, Winstead has helped reinvent the way people get their news. She brought her political wit to The Daily Show and later to radio, co-hosting Air America’s Unfiltered, where she brought Rachel Maddow and hip-hop legend Chuck D on board. Her talents as a comedian and media visionary have been recognized by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly’s “100 most Creative People” issue. She has made numerous television appearances, serving as a regular contributor for MSNBC’s The Ed Show and HLN’s The Joy Behar Show. Most recently, she wrote and produced an independent pilot of her Off-Broadway hit, Wake Up World, a scathing satire about morning chat shows that Rachel Maddow called “the funniest thing I have seen in years.”
Never one to shy away from the political, Winstead has questions for the elected officials who are racing to restrict women’s access to health care. “If creating jobs is the number one priority for politicians in this country, why are they so focused on my uterus?” she asks. “My uterus doesn't create jobs – in fact it no longer even does the one job it's supposed to!
“Thank you, Planned Parenthood, for being there for me. Together we will scream it from the top of our lungs: ‘Planned Parenthood, I am here for you!’”
