For Men’s Health Week, Planned Parenthood Encourages Men to Get Regular Checkups and STI Testing
For Immediate Release: June 17, 2016
“Everyone deserves a sex life that is safe, healthy, and pleasurable and taking care of your body is a big part of that," said Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, Chief Medical Officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “Periodic checkups and screenings are an essential part of staying healthy for men — whether you are straight, bi, or gay, cisgender or transgender. ”
Not enough men get the checkups and preventive care they need. A study out this month showed that half of men skip their annual checkup, and that fear of finding something wrong is a major reason keeping many men away from preventive care.
It can be easy to take your health for granted, but preventive care is an important part of keeping yourself safe, healthy, and happy in both the short and long term. Just like going to the gym or brushing your teeth regularly, making the time to see a health care provider means you can prevent or detect health issues before they become a larger problem.
“One of the most important things sexually active men can do to protect their health is getting tested for STIs and knowing their status — and it’s easier than ever before,” said Dr. McDonald-Mosley.
STI tests are generally quick, simple, and painless. For example, rapid HIV tests can provide results in as fast as 20 minutes from just a swab inside the mouth or a simple finger prick. Many other common STIs simply require a urine sample. The good news is that all STIs, even HIV, are treatable and many are curable. The sooner you know your status, the better you can protect your health and the health of your partner(s). Condoms used consistently and correctly provide the best protection against STIs, and can actually enhance your sex life.
“Planned Parenthood's doors are open to everyone — regardless of gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation, Dr. McDonald-Mosley said. “We believe that all people deserve high-quality, affordable health care and accurate sexual health information, no matter who they are or where they live. ”
You can rely on Planned Parenthood for men’s health services including STI testing and treatment, free or low-cost condoms, and sex education and information to help you take charge of your sexual health. Many Planned Parenthood health centers offer other services for men, including cancer screenings, vasectomies, infertility screenings and referrals, erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation support, physical exams, treatment for other conditions, and referrals.
In the last 10 years, Planned Parenthood has nearly doubled the number of male patients we see nationally for health issues that affect men: Between 2004 and 2014, there was a 76 percent increase in Planned Parenthood male patients. June is also Pride Month, and Planned Parenthood is proud to provide health services and information to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
