Kansas Governor Signs Dangerous Abortion Restriction into Law
For Immediate Release: April 8, 2015
Medical experts speak out against restrictions on safe medical care
New York, NY – Yesterday, over the objection of local and national medical experts, Kansas Governor Brownback signed into law a dangerous measure that could restrict access to safe, legal abortion for many women after 13 weeks. Since 2011, Kansas has enacted 29 restrictions on safe, legal abortion, according to Guttmacher. State legislatures nationwide have introduced more than 330 provisions seeking to restrict access to abortion just this year.
Statement from Dr. Vanessa Cullins, Vice President for External Medical Affairs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
"As a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist and medical administrator for more than two decades, I have seen or provided oversight for thousands of patients over my career. This new law in Kansas is deeply disturbing because it inserts politicians where they don't belong -- directly into doctor's exam room -- by restricting a procedure that evidence shows is not only safe, but the safest procedure for most women who are in need of an abortion in the second trimester. Every patient deserves access to the safest, highest quality care -- this law could tie doctors' hands, which is why we at Planned Parenthood fight bills peddling bad medicine in whatever form they appear."
Additional Background:
A new poll out today from VOX shows that 87% of Americans want a woman's abortion experience to be informed by medically accurate information.
