For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Laurie Rubiner, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) vice president for public policy and advocacy, was honored with the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Felicia Stewart Advocacy Award.
The annual award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Felicia Stewart and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to advocacy on behalf of reproductive health and rights. The award was presented at the APHA annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.
“On behalf of the three million patients who rely on Planned Parenthood each year, we are thrilled that Laurie Rubiner is being honored with the Felicia Stewart Award. Laurie leads both our organization and our movement to advance and protect access to reproductive and sexual health in America,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “It is so fitting that the APHA is recognizing Laurie’s two decades of work on behalf of health care access both in the U.S. and around the world.”
As PPFA’s vice president for public policy and advocacy, Laurie Rubiner is the point person advancing Planned Parenthood’s legislative and policy agendas on Capitol Hill as well as mobilizing Planned Parenthood’s millions of grassroots supporters.
Rubiner has more than 20 years’ experience working on health issues. She has extensive experience on Capitol Hill, having worked for both Senators John Chaffee (R-RI) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY).
Rubiner played an instrumental role in helping protect and advance the rights of all people to reproductive health care in the historic health care legislation that passed earlier this year. She articulated thoughtful policy proposals and represented Planned Parenthood in countless meetings as the health care bill was being crafted and debated.
“I humbly and graciously accept the Felicia Stewart award,” said Rubiner. “I hope to continue to honor the legacy of the amazing Felicia Stewart by working tirelessly to advance reproductive rights for women around the world and to ensure that every woman is free to make the most basic choices for herself.”
