Obsession over Planned Parenthood Turning Congress into “Five Ring Circus”
For Immediate Release: Dec. 28, 2015
Pelosi and Brazile Call Out Republican Party in Disarray over Boehner Resignation And Extreme Push on Planned Parenthood
Washington, DC — An extreme flank of Congress has taken 14 votes to restrict women’s access to reproductive health care in the past few months, with four in September alone; forced Speaker Boehner to announce his resignation from Congress; and just last night announced an additional special panel focused solely on investigating Planned Parenthood — prompting both the DNC’s Donna Brazile and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi this Sunday to call out the disarray the extreme flank of the Republican Party is causing in Congress.
Statement by Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
"This is now a five-ring circus — and counting. The most extreme opponents of women's health in Congress have pushed 14 separate votes to restrict women's health in just the past several months, are leading four separate committees in investigating Planned Parenthood, and now have created a new special panel for the sole purpose of focusing on Planned Parenthood."
"We will, of course, cooperate with any fact-finding inquiry — even though these investigations are all based on false and discredited claims, without a shred of evidence of wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood.
"This is really an attempt of to ban abortion and defund Planned Parenthood. It's an assault on every woman whose breast cancer was caught early because of Planned Parenthood and every woman who has made her own decision about whether and when to have a child."
CNN’s State of the Union:
JAKE TAPPER: Leader Pelosi, thanks so much for doing this. We appreciate it. A tsunami of news Friday with Speak Boehner announcing that he's stepping down you have had a long relationship with him, you spoke with him, what did he have to say?
MINORITY LEADER NANCY PELOSI: the whole idea that the speaker is resigning is a sign of the disarray of the Republican Party
ABC’s This Week:
MARTHA RADDATZ: Donna, what does this do for President Obama's last year in office?
DONNA BRAZILE, VICE CHAIRWOMAN, DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE: Well, you know, under Mr. Boehner's leadership, we've been facing on crisis after another crisis. Multiple times the Republicans have basically threatened to shut down the government. We've had fight over raising the debt ceiling. We've had fight over funding the Department of Homeland Security. Now we're having a fight over funding Planned Parenthood.
So I think for President Obama, clearly he's going to continue to govern with the American people in mind. But the House Republicans, they're in disarray. …
But this is a moment of disarray for the Republicans and I don't think they're going to get their act together.
As the New York Times Editorial Board recently wrote in their editorial, “The G.O.P.’s Obsession With Planned Parenthood,”
“The Republican obsession with the group seems to come to this: denying women, especially poor women, the health care they need; pandering for primary votes among Tea Party regulars; and obstructing the budget process and the smooth functioning of government. Quite a record.”
