Omnibus Budget May Not ‘Defund’ Planned Parenthood,
but Threat Remains in ACA Repeal Bill
For Immediate Release: May 1, 2017
Washington, DC – Media are reporting that the omnibus budget deal does not include a provision to “defund” Planned Parenthood. However, it is important to remember that Republican leaders still want to block patients from seeking care at Planned Parenthood.
The Republican proposal to repeal the ACA (American Health Care Act), likely up for a vote this week, includes a provision to “defund” Planned Parenthood.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
Congress did the right thing in rejecting efforts to include a ‘defunding’ provision in the omnibus budget bill. However, the threat of attacks on Planned Parenthood still remain, as Republicans have included a provision that would block patients from seeking care at Planned Parenthood in the House health care repeal bill.
“Plain and simple, ‘defunding’ Planned Parenthood would deny millions of women access to cancer screenings, birth control, and STD testing and treatment and should be rejected.
“The one in five women who rely on Planned Parenthood don’t go to make a political statement. They go for health care. House leadership needs to listen to the 80% of the public who support Planned Parenthood and oppose ‘defunding.’
