Planned Parenthood Applauds Reps. Ryan and DeLauro for Commonsense Legislation Focusing on Prevention
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Washington, DC — As one of the nation’s leading providers and advocates of women’s health care, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) applauds the introduction of the “Preventing Unintended Pregnancies, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act” (PUPRNASPA) by Reps. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).
“Planned Parenthood applauds Rep. Tim Ryan and Rep. Rosa DeLauro for proposing commonsense legislation that will help prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion by addressing its root causes,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “Planned Parenthood knows firsthand that women and men in America need access to basic, preventive health care. This legislation will increase access to critically needed affordable contraception, improve health care for low-income women and families, invest in comprehensive, medically accurate sex education, and support women in the choices they make. Simply put, it invests in prevention programs that work.”
More than 90 percent of the health care provided by Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers nationwide focuses on primary and preventive care, including contraception, cancer screenings, routine gynecological exams, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, to ensure women and their families lead healthy and productive lives.
Specifically, the PUPRNASPA includes
• increased support for the nation’s Title X family planning program
• expanded coverage of family planning under Medicaid for low-income women
• grants for teen pregnancy prevention comprehensive education (encouraging teens to delay sexual activity and providing age-appropriate, factually and medically accurate, and complete contraceptive information for teens)
• teen pregnancy prevention incentive grants
• grants to encourage creative approaches to teen pregnancy prevention
• support for after-school programs
