For Immediate Release: April 15, 2016
REHYA will support sex education for youth in order to give them the information and skills they need to make healthy decisions and reduce sexual health disparities young people face across the country
Washington, D.C. – Planned Parenthood applauds Senator Cory Booker (D- NJ) for the introduction of the Real Education for Healthy Youth Act (REHYA). The Act supports the health and well-being of young people by providing the sex education they need in order to make healthy decisions. Planned Parenthood also thanks original cosponsors Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Al Franken (D-MN), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Patty Murray (D-WA), Bernard Sanders (D-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Ron Wyden (D-OR).
Statement from Dana Singiser, Vice President, Public Policy and Government Affairs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“As the nation’s largest provider of sex education, Planned Parenthood knows how important it is to equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. Young people, particularly youth of color, experience health disparities related to STIs, HIV, and unintended pregnancy. Access to high quality sex education is a critical step toward addressing these disparities. We applaud the efforts made by Senator Cory Booker and the bill’s cosponsors for moving the country toward a more equitable, knowledgeable and healthy future.”
REHYA ensures youth have access to the information they need to make healthy decisions about sexual health. The bill requires programs be inclusive of all youth and evidence-based. The bill also eliminates the Title V abstinence-only-until-marriage state grant program and reprograms the $75 million per year to pay for the new grant program.
