Planned Parenthood Applauds Supreme Court’s Takedown of North Carolina’s Racist Gerrymandering
For Immediate Release: May 23, 2017
Washington, D.C. — Striking down North Carolina’s appeal of a lower court’s ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday found that the district lines drawn by the state’s legislature illegally created voting districts based on race. Planned Parenthood believes that every person should have an equal voice in our democracy and stands against attempts to limit the power of Black voters.
Statement by Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
North Carolina actively tried to suppress the voting power of its Black citizens, stifling their voice in federal elections. This is a gross violation of the fundamental civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution, and Planned Parenthood applauds the Supreme Court’s decision to stand up for justice and for the integrity of our electoral process. As we work to create a free and equal democracy, this ruling is an important step in challenging the racist gerrymandering that infringes on the rights of Black voters across the country.
