PLANNED PARENTHOOD CALLS FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2009 MAGGIE AWARDS FOR MEDIA EXCELLENCE
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Awards Recognize Reproductive Health and Rights Coverage
New York — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), the nation’s leading reproductive health care advocate and provider, is now accepting nominations for its 2009 PPFA Maggie Awards for Media Excellence. The awards recognize exceptional contributions by the media and arts and entertainment industries that enhance the public's understanding of reproductive rights and health care issues, including contraception, sex education, teen pregnancy, abortion, and international family planning.
“Planned Parenthood is proud to once again recognize members of the media for their exceptional and courageous coverage of reproductive rights and health care issues,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “As a longtime reproductive health care provider and advocate, we know firsthand that open and accurate sexual health discussions are the key to preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections."
Named after Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, the annual awards cover the following categories: advertising, broadcast media, radio, newspaper, magazine, new media, music and video. Entries are judged by professionals from the communications field and experts in family planning and reproductive health. Judges consider creativity, quality, relevance and effectiveness, as well as cultural diversity.
Nominations for the 2009 PPFA Maggie Awards — for work appearing in 2008 — should be submitted by February 16, 2009, along with a completed nomination form. The nomination form and other information about submitting a nomination can be found on the PPFA website at www.plannedparenthood.org/newsroom/ppfa-maggie-awards-10047.htm
Maggie Awards will be presented to winners in the arts and entertainment industries during the PPFA National Conference in Houston, TX, in March 2009, and to winners in the media categories during the PPFA Organizing and Policy Summit in Washington, DC, in July 2009.
