Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading reproductive health care advocate and provider, is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Planned Parenthood Federation of America Maggie Awards for Media Excellence.
The awards recognize exceptional contributions by the media and arts and entertainment industries that enhance the public's understanding of reproductive rights and health care issues, including contraception, sex education, teen pregnancy, abortion, and international family planning.
“We know the media plays a critical role in educating the public on key issues that affect us all,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “Planned Parenthood cares passionately about helping people lead healthy, well-informed lives, and with these awards, we honor journalists’ accurate, compassionate, and in-depth coverage of reproductive health issues.”
Inaugurated in 1978 and named after Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, the annual awards cover the following categories:
• Commentary
• Daily Print Reporting
• Radio Reporting
• General Interest Magazine
• Women’s Magazine
• Online Reporting
• TV News Reporting
• Arts and Entertainment. Social Media
• Community/Personal Blog
Entries are judged by professionals from the communications field and experts in family planning and reproductive health. Judges consider creativity, quality, relevance and effectiveness, as well as cultural diversity.
