Planned Parenthood Celebrates Mexico Decriminalizing Abortion in Coahuila, Mexico
For Immediate Release: Sept. 7, 2021
WASHINGTON — Today, Mexico’s Supreme Court took a historic step towards decriminalizing abortion with a unanimous vote declaring it unconstitutional to punish people who get an abortion.
The decision was in response to the state of Coahuila’s enforcement of imprisonment for women who seek abortions, which are illegal in Coahuila. The vote will serve as precedent for cases in the rest of the country. The decriminalization of abortion in Coahuila also promotes potential modifications to the country’s penal codes.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, interim executive director, Planned Parenthood Global:
“This is a win for activists and patients in Coahuila, Mexico. The Supreme Court laid the building blocks for the country to move toward eventually decriminalizing abortion nationwide. Along with Argentina’s and Ecuador’s long-fought fight for the decriminalization of abortion in some capacity earlier this year, we know Latin Americans continue to work tirelessly to make this happen and momentum is on their side. We are relieved for the women of Coahuila, who never should have been punished for seeking reproductive freedom and health care in the first place. "
Coahuila is just across the border from Texas. This decision comes less than a week after Texas’s unconstitutional S.B. 8 law, which bans abortions after six weeks, took effect.
