Planned Parenthood Celebrates Success of the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)
For Immediate Release: Aug. 7, 2014
CDC program provides essential health care to millions of America’s underserved women
New York, NY ― The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new studies and an infographic this week demonstrating the impact of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) on the 23rd anniversary of the program.
For the first 20 years of the program, more than 4.3 million women with limited access to health care received breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services. The program has provided more than 10.7 million breast and cervical cancer screening examinations and diagnosed more than 56,000 breast cancers and 3,200 cervical cancers.
Planned Parenthood health centers provide clinical breast exams and Pap tests that detect cervical cancer, and some participate in the CDC program.
“The CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program has made significant strides in increasing access to lifesaving health care to millions of women across the country,” said Dr. Vanessa Cullins, Vice President of External Medical Affairs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “This program has helped Planned Parenthood health centers provide breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings to thousands of women who might otherwise not get health care.”
Planned Parenthood provides well woman exams to women all across the country. In 2012, Planned Parenthood health centers provided nearly 500,000 Pap tests, identifying nearly 75,000 women at risk of developing cervical cancer. Planned Parenthood health centers provided 550,000 clinical breast exams, which can help detect irregularities early.
