Planned Parenthood Condemns Conditions in Migrant Detention and Calls on Congress to Close the Camps
For Immediate Release: July 10, 2019
New York, NY — Today, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing to condemn the dangerous conditions, medical neglect, and lack of accountability for the abuse and misconduct at detention facilities across the country.
In an effort to severely limit immigration and the asylum process, the Trump administration has made clear that it will continue this horrific treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, unless Congress takes action to stop these policies and hold Trump accountable.
Statement from: Dr. Leana Wen, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
Each day brings light to the new horrifying reality of the Trump-Pence administration’s discriminatory and racist policies. From unconscionable family separation and inhumane facility conditions to disturbing allegations of sexual assault, and a lack of health care that has cost lives, this administration’s agenda has enabled these atrocities. As a physician and an immigrant myself, I am appalled to see those in dire need denied access to basic human rights and be forced to live in such inhumane conditions.
At Planned Parenthood we are proud to serve every person regardless of immigration status and refuse to stand by silently while people are rounded up into camps, families are torn apart, and entire communities are denied basic human necessities simply because of where they are from. We cannot allow Congress to continue funding the Trump-Pence administration’s campaign of terror. These horrors must stop and the camps must be closed. And we call upon Congress to end them today.
