Planned Parenthood Federation of America today condemned Senate Republicans for blocking an up-or-down vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act. The bill, introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), would have provided women with increased protections against pay discrimination.
Blocking this legislation is just the latest tactic in a string of measures by some members of Congress to restrict women’s rights, instead of advancing equity. This troubling agenda most recently includes Republican efforts to roll back the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and an attempt by Senate Republicans to erode women’s access to birth control and other preventive health services.
“The Paycheck Fairness Act would have protected women in the workplace,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “In these tough economic times, members of Congress should be working together toward solutions that improve the lives of women and their families by remedying pay disparities and relieving the economic burden of birth control, not blocking efforts aimed to achieve equity and health care.”
Nearly 50 years after the Equal Pay Act was passed, women in America still make only 77 cents on the dollar compared with men.
