Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) will honor Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, for his unwavering support of women’s health and rights, at a reception during the Congressional Black Caucus’ 42nd Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, DC.
Chairman Cleaver will be recognized for his tireless work on behalf of millions of women as our country has faced the most aggressive legislative attacks on women’s health and rights in a generation. Dawn Laguens, PPFA executive vice president for public policy, advocacy, and communications, and Dr. Vanessa Cullins, PPFA vice president of external medical affairs, will speak at the event. Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Obama, will make special remarks. In addition, PPFA will recognize actor and advocate Nia Long for her support of women and girls. Planned Parenthood patient Jessica Rolle, a breast cancer survivor who is featured in a Planned Parenthood ad in the October issue of Essence, will share her story.
The event will highlight Planned Parenthood’s expanded breast health program, which will help Planned Parenthood educate more young women about the importance of clinical breast exams, help more women pay for diagnostic services, and provide digital tools to help young women understand what to do if they find something unusual. Among women diagnosed with breast cancer, African-American women are more likely to die from the disease because tumors are often found at a later, more advanced stage, and are larger.
“Planned Parenthood is excited to honor Chairman Cleaver, who has been one of our staunchest and most steadfast supporters,” said Laguens. “He is outspoken and committed to protecting women’s access to health care, ensuring that African-American women have access to breast health education and services so they can detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage.”
