For more than half a century, the Ford Foundation has provided grants and loans that aim to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.
“There are few institutions in American life which have done as much as the Ford Foundation to advance the needs of those who have the least, both here in the United States and around the world,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “It is a tremendous honor to join the Ford Foundation as a trustee, working with its staff and grantees to advance the foundation’s invaluable efforts to support social justice worldwide.”
Richards leads Planned Parenthood, a federation with more than 840 health centers providing high-quality health care to nearly three million patients each year. Planned Parenthood also works to advance policies to meet women’s health care needs by organizing grassroots activists across the country to influence policymakers in nearly every state and Washington, DC. Before she joined Planned Parenthood in 2006, Ms. Richards founded and served as president of America Votes, a coalition of more than 40 national organizations working on voting rights, voter education, and mobilization efforts at the grassroots level. Richards brings to the Ford Foundation a long history of work in the nonprofit sector, particularly in the areas of women’s health, reproductive rights, and social justice.
Ford trustees serve six-year terms, and may be re-elected to the board for a second term. The 15-member board of trustees sets broad policy related to the foundation’s issue areas and geographic focus, budget, investments, and professional standards, and it oversees governance and audits. Members of the board are drawn from around the world and bring expertise in the fields of higher education, business, law, investments, government, and the nonprofit sector.
