Planned Parenthood Federation of America Releases New Video Encouraging Women to Get Checkups in Recognition of National Women’s Health Week
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
New York –As part of National Women’s Health Week (May 12-18), Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) released a new video today in an effort to promote well-woman exams to help women remain healthy by getting preventive checkups, including breast cancer screenings and, if recommended, a Pap test.
Early detection saves lives. The animated video explains what to expect at a well-woman exam and addresses any concerns women may have that keep them from getting the preventive care they need.
“At Planned Parenthood, we know firsthand the importance of regular checkups in protecting women’s health and preventing serious health issues,” said Deborah Nucatola, MD, PPFA Senior Director of Medical Services.
“But some women may be nervous about personal questions and the exams, themselves,” she said. “The video explains that it’s perfectly OK to be nervous and that at Planned Parenthood we understand. We also keep your information completely confidential. Well-woman exams are how we work together to keep you healthy.”
Planned Parenthood health centers offer a wide range of preventive health services, including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, breast health services, the HPV vaccine, and sexual health information and education. Last year alone, Planned Parenthood performed 585,000 Pap tests, 640,000 lifesaving breast exams, and nearly 4.5 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Planned Parenthood also offers online tools that can help people start a conversation with providers about health care: The Check can help users figure out whether to get tested for STDs and My Method can prepare women for a conversation with their providers about the most appropriate and best birth control option for them.
People can visit plannedparenthood.org to find their closest health center and schedule a wellness exam.
Under the Affordable Care Act, women’s preventive health will be covered without co-pays. Already, some women who have insurance are receiving birth control without co-pays, and more will receive the benefit as it kicks in across more health plans. In addition, uninsured women will be able to begin enrolling in health coverage plans starting October 1.
