Planned Parenthood Federation of America, BET Networks Partner to Promote Breast Health Awareness
For Immediate Release: Sept. 29, 2014
Together, PPFA and BET Will Host the Breast Party Ever: “Your Breasts. Your Health. Your Move.”
New York, NY – Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Black Entertainment Television (BET) Networks have joined together for the month of October to educate women, particularly women of color, on the importance of being aware of their breast health. The organizations have come together for the second annual Breast Party Ever, a series of events across the country that brings women together during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to celebrate breast health education and lifesaving health services.
National Breast Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for women to educate themselves, their families and their friends on critical information about breast health care. It is also a great time to remind women that breast exams are part of preventive services covered under the Affordable Care Act. In fact more than 48 million women across the nation are eligible to benefit from covered services. The next open enrollment period to get insured under the new law, also known as Obamacare, starts November 15.
“Women of all ages should take the time to be ‘breast aware,’” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “Planned Parenthood and BET recognize the importance of staying on top of your breast health, and that is why we have committed to working together to ensure women have the resources they need. Together, we can reach millions of woman, particularly those with a greater risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. All women deserve access to education, early detection and the information they need to take charge of their breast health.”
Planned Parenthood is a leading provider of cancer screenings and breast health care for women in the fight to detect breast cancer early and to ensure good breast health. Each year, Planned Parenthood provides 550,000 breast exams at health centers across the country.
“Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among African-American women. By partnering with Planned Parenthood we are able to make a direct appeal to our community and equip our audience with the resources needed to take action,” said Debra Lee, chairman and CEO of BET Networks. “We encourage all women, but especially women of color, to stay informed on breast health.”
The Breast Party Ever will bring together women, community leaders, medical providers, and entertainers to educate women – particularly those between 20 and 40 years old who may not consider themselves at risk – with important information about breast health awareness. The events will take place in Chicago, IL; Durham, NC; and Miami, FL, throughout the month of October. For footage from last year’s Breast Party Ever in Atlanta, click HERE.
