Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Reacts to President Biden’s Address to Congress
For Immediate Release: April 28, 2021
WASHINGTON — Tonight, Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, released the statement below following President Biden’s address to Congress.
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Tonight, President Biden laid out an inspiring vision for the country — one where health and economic equity are a reality for all and opportunities aren’t contingent on where you live, how much money you make, or the color of your skin. This vision can’t be realized, however, unless every person has bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom. Thankfully, the administration is already making significant progress — but they must explicitly protect and expand access to essential care, like abortion. Planned Parenthood will continue to work with President Biden and the Biden-Harris administration to ensure that reproductive health and rights are included in their agenda and that they enact bolder policies to ensure reproductive freedom for all.”
In the first 100 days, President Biden began rolling back the harms of the previous administration — including ending the global gag rule, proposing regulations to end the Title X gag rule, and taking steps to strengthen Medicaid. Last week, Planned Parenthood Federation of America released an Interested Parties Memo outlining the administration’s comprehensive accomplishments for sexual and reproductive rights and health and the next steps the administration must take to expand access to reproductive rights.
In 2019, along with a coalition of more than 100 bold, progressive organizations, Planned Parenthood Federation of America and In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda developed “First Priorities for the Blueprint for Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice,” a detailed list of executive and agency actions on global and domestic issues that Planned Parenthood expects the Biden-Harris administration to continue to swiftly address.
