Planned Parenthood Joins Papi Juice For “Pride In A Time Of Protest”
For Immediate Release: June 23, 2020
Virtual Event Will Showcase Music, Art, and Activism for a Pride Celebration Centering Queer and Trans People of Color
New York, NY — Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Papi Juice are proud to present “Pride In A Time Of Protest,” a virtual event that centers LGBTQ+ people of color, celebrates the power of protest, and highlights how resistance can take many forms. Today at 7PM ET “Pride In A Time Of Protest” will include a performance by artist Camilo Godoy; music by DJs Brownskinhazel, Fiveboi, and Oscar Nñ; and a panel moderated by Peyton Dix, Special Projects Editor at Instyle Magazine.
The panel conversation will cover the importance of racial representation within the LGBTQ+ community and the movement for queer and trans rights — with a focus on art, music, and healing as transformative components of self-care in order to decolonize spaces and build community power — especially during COVID-19. Panelists include:
-
Tourmaline: artist, filmmaker, and activist
-
Fatima Jamal: interdisciplinary artist, writer, and public speaker
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Planned Parenthood is proud to partner with Papi Juice in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice. Let us not forget that Pride was born in protest, led by transgender women of color, and that spirit is very much alive today. This Pride Month — and 365 days a year — Planned Parenthood honors the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community, especially LGBTQ+ people of color, who continue to face unconscionable attacks on their bodily autonomy, access to health care, and their very humanity. It’s our hope that this event can inspire you, bring you a little joy, and help us all celebrate Pride, together in solidarity.”
Despite the progress made in the 51 years since the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, LGBTQ+ people’s ability to access health care, raise their families, and live their most authentic lives is still under attack. This is even more true for LGBTQ+ people of color who continue to face oppression and violence at the intersections of racism, homophobia, and transphobia. Queer people of color are being disproportionately hurt by COVID-19 — amid already existing inequities in health care due to systemic racism and oppression — and compounded by the fact that many health care providers do not offer affirming and knowledgeable services to trans and gender-nonconforming people. Right now, when people’s health and lives are at stake, Planned Parenthood is committed to providing services to LGBTQ+ patients across the country, many of whom rely on Planned Parenthood as their only source of care.
Statement from Papi Juice Collective:
“LGBTQ+ people of color have always demonstrated the power of resistance through our art and activism. We’ve had to create collective spaces to express ourselves freely despite the numerous threats to our livelihood. Our communities know all too well the kind of brutality happening across the country right now — with Black trans women historically sparking the modern day LGBTQ+ movement, and bearing the brunt of transphobic and racial violence today. This year, we go back to the roots of Pride — a protest against police brutality on Black and Latinx queer and trans people — because celebrating liberation comes with a fight for justice. Papi Juice is thrilled to partner with Planned Parenthood, who stands with LGBTQ+ communities in the fight for our civil and human rights against homophobia, transphobia, and racism.”
As Pride events have grown and expanded across the world — people of color have increasingly fought to make space for themselves and their communities in Pride celebrations, specifically by creating Black and Latinx Prides to commemorate the history, contributions, and legacies of LGBTQ+ people of color. Papi Juice is an art collective that aims to affirm and celebrate the lives of queer and trans people of color, and lives at the intersection of art, music, and nightlife through curated events. They were recently named on HuffPost’s list of Top 20 Culture Shifters in the country, and were noted for “sparking important conversations in big and small ways.”
