Planned Parenthood Launches “Sexo sin-vergüenza,” a Sexual and Reproductive Health Blog for Spanish-Speaking Latino Communities
For Immediate Release: Oct. 4, 2021
NEW YORK CITY — In honor of Sexual Health Month, Planned Parenthood launched Sexo sin-vergüenza, a new blog column for Spanish-speaking Latinos to ask experts questions about sex and reproductive health in a culturally competent environment.
As seen through the success of our digital health products Chatea/Textea and Roo, Latinos 15 to 29 are increasingly turning to Planned Parenthood for information on wellness, birth control, pregnancy options, and emergency contraception. With Sexo sin-vergüenza, young Latinos and their parents and caregivers can explore conversation on sex and relationships by submitting their queries to trustworthy, down-to-earth, and insightful sex educators, and read answers to similar questions.
Sexo sin-vergüenza serves as a friendly hub for times when someone wants reliable answers to private sexual health questions. For many Latino families, have no access to information about sex, contraception, sexual health and intimate relationships — often seen as sensitive and taboo topics, for cultural or religious reasons. Planned Parenthood aims to break down those barriers so that everyone — especially young people — can have knowledge of their sexual and reproductive health and live a safe and healthy life.
Statement from Dr. Sara C. Flowers, vice president of education at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“When people have access to the sexual and reproductive health information they need, they’re equipped with tools that can help them live healthy and fulfilling lives and build stronger, healthier relationships with themselves and others. As the Latino population continues to grow in the US, Planned Parenthood aims to focus on the needs of Latino patients. With Sexo sin-vergüenza, a blog created by and for Latinos, Planned Parenthood strengthens our commitment to providing accurate sexual health information in culturally responsive ways for the benefit of Latino communities, inside and outside the United States.”
Statement from Trilce Ortiz, Latinx content strategist at Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“In many areas of our Latino communities, conversations about sexuality remain taboo. Even in families where there is an interest in talking more openly about puberty, sexuality and reproductive health, parents do not always have the best tools to have these conversations. Meanwhile, according to data from Nielsen, 98% of young Latinos have access to a smartphone and too many use the internet as their main source of sex education. This means oftentimes they’re learning incorrect information from dubious sources.
“This is where Sexo sin-vergüenza comes in. Supported by Planned Parenthood's100-plus years as a national leader in sex education, sexual health, and reproductive rights, you can think of Sexo sin-vergüenza as a friendly sex educator with a wealth of knowledge. The blog, developed by and for Latinos, will generate dialogues around sexual issues and offer fact-based information for readers, who can also submit their questions."
