Statement from Cecile Richards, president, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“As the leading women’s health care provider and advocate, we know our health care system only really works if it works for everybody. That’s why our dedicated staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to educate their communities about the Affordable Care Act and helping women and families get enrolled for new, more affordable health insurance.
“Planned Parenthood health centers across the country are scheduling in-person appointments through our online assistor tool and they’ve got staff available for in-person help through the February 15 deadline. You can learn more about the health care law and get connected to in-person help on our website at Planned Parenthood Health Insurance Facts. Many individuals may also find out that they’re eligible for financial assistance by using our online calculator.
“We know that empowered women are able to empower families. They empower communities, societies, and the world – and thanks to the Affordable Care Act, more women than ever have access to high-quality affordable health care and coverage for the full range of reproductive health services, including birth control, maternity benefits, mammograms, and other critical preventive health care without a copay.
“While we have made great progress as a country in public health outcomes, thanks in large part to the Affordable Care Act and investments in family planning, there is still much more work to do to ensure all women – no matter who they are or where they live or how much money they have – are able to have access the highest quality health care and reproductive health services.”
The ACA has benefited millions of Americans, who are now able to access quality, affordable coverage.
- More than 9.5 million individuals have enrolled in coverage through the Marketplace during this open enrollment period, and it is expected that more individuals will continue to enroll through the end of the open enrollment period (February 15, 2015). More than half of those enrolled in Marketplace coverage are women and 87% of enrollees have received financial assistance. About 4.5 million women have gained access to quality, affordable coverage through the Marketplaces, enabling them to receive important women’s health services, including prenatal care, birth control, maternity care, and breastfeeding support and supplies. An additional 10.1 million individuals have been able to obtain Medicaid or CHIP coverage since the first open enrollment period in October 2013.
- Over 116 million men, women, and children are able to benefit from coverage of expanded preventive care with no out-of-pocket costs under the ACA. This includes services like immunizations, HIV screening, and blood pressure screenings. Thanks to the ACA, an estimated 48.5 million women are already benefiting from preventive care at no cost, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, breast feeding support and supplies, well-woman exams, and birth control.
- Medicaid is particularly important for women. Women comprise more than two-thirds of the adult Medicaid population. With Medicaid coverage, women are able to receive important health care including birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and maternity care.
