Planned Parenthood Names Leader in Immigration Rights, Angela Kelley, as Vice President for Campaigns and Advocacy
For Immediate Release: Feb. 3, 2015
WASHINGTON, DC — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) announced today that it has named Angela Maria Kelley as Vice President for Campaigns and Advocacy. Kelley brings more than 20 years of experience in the national immigration reform movement, and has served as the Vice President for Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress (CAP) since May of 2009. In recognition of her leadership at CAP and in the immigration movement, Kelley has been at the White House for the past two months providing strategic advice on the implementation of the president's recently announced Executive Actions.
“Angie Kelley brings deep expertise and fresh ideas in advocacy and campaigns and can help us ask new questions to make our work on behalf of women’s reproductive health and rights stronger than ever. She is dynamic, thoughtful, and an extraordinarily collaborative leader and partner,” said Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Kelley will oversee Planned Parenthood’s efforts to protect and expand women’s access to health care through organizing, political efforts, and issue-based campaigns. She joins a unique organization at an important moment. Planned Parenthood is both a trusted health care provider and a leading advocate for women’s health. One in five women has turned to Planned Parenthood at some point in her life for professional, nonjudgmental, and confidential care. Planned Parenthood is also one of the largest women’s health advocacy groups, with eight million activists, supporters, and donors. In addition, Planned Parenthood works with officials at the federal, state, and local levels to shape pro-women’s health policies and legislation.
“Angie Kelley is a widely respected leader and we are thrilled that she is bringing her vision and talents to Planned Parenthood’s dynamic team. She will play a key role in increasing and leveraging support for women’s health and rights at a historic moment,” said Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President and Chief Experience Officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Dignity and equality for women have been common threads from the beginning of Kelley’s career, first as a clerk at the organization that become the National Partnership for Women and Families and then as a staff attorney at Ayuda, where she provided direct legal assistance to low-income clients, including women in domestic violence cases.
She is the daughter of South American immigrants and began her career as an attorney for a legal services agency in Washington, D.C., representing low-income immigrants on immigration and family matters. She is a graduate of the George Washington University Law School and has been a Georgetown University Law School Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellow.
With a small group of other leaders, Kelley developed and helped implement long-term strategies that have transformed the national landscape on immigration – creating the public demand and political will to reform a broken system, and then harnessing that work to advance concrete reform on behalf of immigrants and their families.
In her role at CAP, she developed and oversaw multifaceted advocacy campaigns to expand protections for immigrants while also defending against restrictions at the state and federal levels. She is quoted widely in the media, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Politico, and makes frequent national radio and television appearances. Prior to joining CAP, Kelley served as Director of the Immigration Policy Center and as Deputy Director of the National Immigration Forum, both roles where she led advocacy efforts that integrated outreach and organizing, coalition partnerships, research and policy, communications, political advocacy, and synthesis of local and national priorities.
