Planned Parenthood Participates in Nationally Renowned Aspen Health Forum
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
Joins Leading Health Organizations to Lend Expertise as a Health Care Provider and Advocate
Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), one of the nation’s leading reproductive health care providers and advocates, will join several other of the world’s most prestigious health care organizations, providers, experts, advocates and reporters from across the country at the renowned Aspen Health Forum in Colorado this weekend.
PPFA President Cecile Richards, PPFA Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy Laurie Rubiner and PPFA Vice President of Online Services Tom Subak will lend their voices and expertise to panel discussions ranging from health care reform to teen temptations and innovative health outreach online.
“For more than 90 years, Planned Parenthood health centers have been trusted preventive health care providers to more than three million men, women and teens a year,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “We are leading the charge to ensure women are a priority in health care reform and that young people have the tools and information they need to protect themselves and lead healthy, productive lives. This forum provides a unique opportunity for health experts in various fields to share firsthand knowledge on improving the health and well-being of all Americans, regardless of age, gender and race.”
The Aspen Health Forum is sponsored by TIME magazine and the Aspen Institute. The institute is known for bringing together world leaders and philosophers, executives, advocates and scholars to exchange ideas, distill insights and share new knowledge that will lead to better health and well-being for all Americans.
At the forum, Planned Parenthood leaders will discuss the organization’s role as a provider and advocate and share information on a variety of panels, including the following:
Reforming the System: President Obama’s Prospects for Health Reform; The Stakeholders Speak
PPFA Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy Rubiner will address Planned Parenthood’s priorities in health care reform: any health care reform effort must include access to comprehensive reproductive health care, and women’s access to essential community providers must be protected. This ensures that basic preventive care, such as contraception, Pap tests, and other cancer screenings, are covered and that women are able to access trusted health care providers in the communities where they live.
Generation Health: Teen Temptations
PPFA President Richards will address our outreach to teens and young adults across the country who are being trained as peer educators and providing lifesaving health information to their peers on how to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. These young people are becoming our frontline advocates in state legislatures and on Capitol Hill on behalf of comprehensive sex education.
Science of Sex: The Big Idea — Sex
PPFA Vice President of Online Services Subak will address outreach online and through new technology. He will describe how Planned Parenthood is bringing medically accurate sex education to young people and their parents, and also looking for innovative ways to reach new audiences — whether it’s broadening access to health information through new online tools, or raising awareness by partnering with MTV, Kaiser and other community providers for a “GYT — Get Yourself Tested” campaign.
