Planned Parenthood Partners With Bumble, Grindr, Hornet, and OkCupid To Help Build a Culture of Consent
For Immediate Release: April 2, 2018
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
WASHINGTON D.C. – This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Planned Parenthood Federation of America is partnering with Bumble, Grindr, Hornet, and OkCupid to help them build a culture of consent and respect on their platforms. As the nation’s largest provider of sex education, Planned Parenthood is committed to helping people communicate about sex and consent respectfully and confidently, and to engage in healthy relationships.
Together, we’ll be creating and sharing social media and editorial content to educate users on why and how to talk about consent. We’ll also be highlighting Planned Parenthood’s digital resources on consent, including our series of online videos designed to explain and model to young people what consent is and what it looks like in different situations.
Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
Sex education that includes information and skill building around consent is a critical tool to helping prevent sexual violence. That’s why Planned Parenthood is working alongside Bumble, Grindr, Hornet, and OkCupid to provide users with education and resources on how to communicate and practice consent in sexual situations. Everyone deserves to have consensual, safe, fun, and healthy sex and relationships.
To help prevent sexual violence, sex education must include information about consent and healthy relationships. People deserve sex education that gives them the information and skills they need to navigate sex and relationships. Planned Parenthood is continually looking for innovative approaches to get people the information and care they need to lead healthy lives and achieve their goals – whether that’s on their phones or in a health center – and dating apps are uniquely positioned to share this important information with millions of users.
Planned Parenthood stands with all survivors of sexual violence by respecting their decision to share or not share their experiences and by supporting better policies to help prevent and respond to sexual violence. Planned Parenthood also offers vital sexual and reproductive health care in a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment, including STI testing and treatment, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), emergency contraception, pregnancy tests, options counseling, and abortion.
