“President Obama’s budget makes critical investments to expand women’s access to health care at home and abroad through Medicaid, Title X, and international family planning programs. His budget would protect the essential care provided by Medicaid and lift barriers to access to reproductive health care for women. It takes a key step to ensure that a woman serving in the Peace Corps has the same rights and access to abortion in cases when she is the victim of rape or when her life is endangered as are afforded women in the armed services and many other women covered by federal health programs. Women in the Peace Corps should be able to make private medical decisions without the interference of politicians.
“Further, we applaud the much-needed investments in the Title X program, which provides millions of women with access to basic health care including birth control. Thousands of women have lost their health care access due to irresponsible cuts to Title X in the sequester, which comes in addition to the thousands of women who have been impacted by disproportionate cuts to such programs during previous congressional budget fights.
“The president’s budget also supports increased investments in family planning and reproductive health programs for women around the world as a part of a comprehensive U.S. global health strategy. Over the last several years, the sequester and Congress’ budget cuts to the international family planning program have resulted in millions of women losing access to basic, lifesaving birth control supplies and services, leading to hundreds of thousands of unintended pregnancies, and thousands of preventable maternal deaths.
“However, we are disappointed that the budget does not remove all restrictions on women’s ability to access the full range of reproductive health care services. We look forward to working with the president and Congress to remove these restrictions.
“As the nation’s leading advocate and provider of women’s reproductive health care, Planned Parenthood sees every day that the best way to prevent unintended pregnancies is to invest in and ensure more women have access to affordable, quality reproductive health care. The president’s budget is an important step in that direction.”
