Planned Parenthood Receives Donation to Create New Teen Council in Treasure Valley
For Immediate Release: June 23, 2016
BOISE, Idaho – “We couldn’t be more thrilled about creating a new Teen Council in Idaho,” said Chris Charbonneau, CEO of PPGNHI. “This generous gift will bring a Teen Council to Idaho's largest metro area—a goal of our organization for many years. We believe teens deserve to have medically-accurate and reliable information about sex and related topics and this program supports just that.”
Teen Council is a peer education and leadership program for high school students. Teens learn medically accurate, sexual health information and teach this information to their peers through classroom presentations. Teens also serve as sexual health advocates by organizing events in their schools and communities to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy and LGBTQ issues.
Teen Council originated at PPGNHI and is growing across the country. In our four-state affiliate, we have reached more than 6,500 teens through the program. PPGNHI aims to equip Treasure Valley teens with access to trustworthy sources of information so they can make informed decisions and become the healthiest generation.
The impact of Teen Council ripples throughout the community and covers issues to include healthy relationships, consent and birth control methods, as well as one-on-one peer-led sex education that exponentially changes lives, one chat at a time. Next month, Planned Parenthood will be hosting its first Teen Council Summit in Washington D.C. The event will connect Teen Council members from across the country for workshops, leadership and advocacy.
The impact of this donation will give Treasure Valley an opportunity to connect with more teens and other peer educators and directly address some of the biggest challenges in keeping teens healthy.
