Planned Parenthood Statement on the Legacy of Rep. Louise Slaughter
For Immediate Release: March 16, 2018
Planned Parenthood Federation of America issued the following statement on the passing of Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter:
Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Congresswoman Slaughter was a fierce advocate for people's health and the right to control their own bodies. As the first woman to chair the House Rules committee, she effectively fought to improve access to health care, most recently through passage of the Affordable Care Act and the thwarting of more than 60 attempts in the House to repeal the law. She always stood and fought on behalf of Planned Parenthood patients. We’re proud to have had her as an ally and friend, and her legacy will carry on.
“It’s in her footsteps that tens of thousands of women are running for office and taking action in their communities. As co-chair of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, Louise never shied away from an opportunity to speak out and protect a woman’s right to plan her future and control her body. And she worked to make family planning accessible for millions of women and girls around the globe in her work on international family planning. Her decades of service helped make America a more equitable place to live and expanded opportunity for countless people. We offer our condolences to her family, friends and staff at this difficult time.”
Statement from Michelle Casey, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York:
“Congresswoman Slaughter was a true example of grit in action. She was a tireless advocate for women, girls and families in our community and nationwide. She was a champion for multiple legislative efforts and advocated for our work and Planned Parenthood at every turn. Our deepest condolences to family, friends and staff of Louise Slaughter; she will be missed.”
