Planned Parenthood Wins People’s Voice Webby Award for Video Series on Consent
For Immediate Release: May 4, 2016
New York, NY — Today, the Webbys announced that Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s video series on consent has won the 2016 People’s Voice Award in the Public Service & Activism (Channel) category of the 20th Annual Webby Awards. The video series is designed to help young people understand consent in a fun and sexy, as well as educational, way.
The Webby People's Voice Award is selected by the voting public, with nearly 2.5 million votes from over 200 countries and territories worldwide cast last year. As a Webby Award nominee, Planned Parenthood’s video series was selected as one of the five best in the world in its category. The Webby Awards will be broadcast on YouTube on May 17.
“We are incredibly proud of our video series on consent and are thrilled to win a Webby People’s Voice Award,” said Dr. Leslie Kantor, vice president of education for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “We know that most people think that too little is being done to educate young people about consent and sexual assault so it’s gratifying to know that these videos are meeting a real need. We hope these videos help young people better understand that consent is part of healthy communication in relationships and encourage them to have open, honest conversations with their partners.”
A survey released by Planned Parenthood last week showed that an overwhelming majority of U.S. adults support teaching how to ask for consent (88%), how to recognize whether your partner is giving consent (93%), and how to avoid sexually assaulting someone (95%) in high schools.
The “Consent 101” series of online videos is geared for older teens and young adults (17-22), and is inclusive of diverse sexual orientations and race/ethnicities. The videos explain and model what consent is and what it looks like in different situations. Organizations and schools working with older high school and college-age youth are encouraged to use the videos in their work, and Planned Parenthood has developed lesson plans to accompany the videos, on consent and media literacy.
“Planned Parenthood is here with education, resources, and guidance on consent for educators, young people, and parents,” said Dr. Kantor. “As the nation’s largest provider of sex education, Planned Parenthood is committed to helping young people make good decisions and engage in healthy relationships.”
Across the country, Planned Parenthood affiliates work in their local communities on sex education that includes lessons related to healthy relationships, communication, negotiation and refusal skills and consent. Planned Parenthood affiliates provide education and outreach to 1.5 million people of all ages in schools and communities across the country.
As the nation’s leading provider of reproductive health care and sex education, Planned Parenthood is developing innovative ways to use technology to get women, men, and young people the information they need to make healthy decisions and take control of their sexual health. Planned Parenthood websites, including Planned Parenthood en Español, receive an estimated 60 million visits each year.
