Statement from Destiny Lopez, Director of Latino Engagement for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, on the National Council of La Raza’s Report on Medicaid
For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014
The National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) finding that one in four Latinos is covered by Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) underscores how important they are to improving the health of Latinas and their families.
“Medicaid provides access to essential primary and preventive care, including family planning services. Family planning programs are vital to keeping women and families healthy. When Latinas are able to plan their pregnancies, they are more likely to seek prenatal care, resulting in better health outcomes for both them and their children.
“In addition, family planning programs save the Federal government and the states money. For every $1 spent on family planning, Medicaid saves nearly $4.
“These findings show how important it is to keep protection and funding for Medicaid, including family planning services, intact. Without these services, our community would have an increased chance for poor health outcomes and unplanned pregnancy.”
