Supreme Court Affirms Equal Representation for All Americans
For Immediate Release: April 12, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the Supreme Court unanimously concurred that every person – not just eligible voters – has the right to be represented by their state legislators. In this, the Court upheld the long-standing and constitutional principle of "one person, one vote" that has ensured for decades everyone in America – regardless of who they are or where they live – is entitled to equal representation.
Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America
“This is a win for democracy. No matter who they are or where they live, each individual is entitled to equal representation. At Planned Parenthood we firmly believe that every person is entitled to full autonomy, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or immigration status. This ruling shot down a politically motivated attempt to further disenfranchise vast swaths of Americans, many of whom are from communities of color, including African Americans and Latinos – and we applaud the Court’s unanimous decision.”
State and local legislators make crucial decisions about funding for programs like health care, roads and schools that every person in the community depends on and benefits from; it’s important that electoral districts are drawn to represent everyone in the community, including children and other non-voters.
