20,000 Volunteers Help Planned Parenthood Promote Women's Health And Safety Nationwide
New York, NY — In honor of National Volunteer Week, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) today celebrated the work of the more than 20,000 volunteers, who work part time or full time at affiliates, to help ensure that women and families across the country can access family planning services and vital reproductive health care information.
“Ninety years ago Planned Parenthood began as an all-volunteer organization. It is Planned Parenthood volunteers who have helped make this federation what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. The tremendous support of our 20,000 volunteers allows Planned Parenthood to deliver family planning services and education to millions across the country,” said Cecile Richards, PPFA president.
PPFA’s 20,000 volunteers give well over 60,000 hours of service yearly. They serve in a wide range of capacities, including support of clinical health care services, administrative services, and educational services for women, men, and teens. They also provide outreach to underserved populations, and speak to legislators about the importance of reproductive rights.
“PPFA’s Volunteers of the Year have shown exceptional dedication and imagination in their efforts to help women, teens and families access vital health care, and we are proud to honor them for all that they do,” added Richards.
PPFA Volunteers of the Year include:
- Planned Parenthood of Central Pennsylvania’s Margaret “Peggy” Rubin. Since 1986, Peggy has served as an affiliate board member and board chair, and on the national level as a member of the PPFA Cultural Diversity Steering Committee, member of the PPFA National Nominating Committee, and chair of the Planned Parenthood Alumni Association.
- Nicholas (Nick) Goldberg, board member of Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island. Nick built a networking group called “United for Choice, Building the Movement,” successfully moving the affiliate toward its goal of bringing more young people into the Planned Parenthood community.
- Katie Rider of Planned Parenthood of Western Washington. Katie created and chaired the Planned Parenthood Young Professionals Group, which has raised money for the affiliate and engaged and activated new volunteers 21–35 years old in the Seattle area.
