I am 20 years old and sexually active. Should I get a pap test?
In general, it’s recommended that women start getting routine Pap tests at age 21. The reason is that abnormal cell growths that the test detects are very unlikely in younger women. A Pap test — also called a Pap smear — can find pre-cancerous cells in your cervix. You should have a Pap test every two years until you’re 30, and about one every three years from age 30 on if your test results continue to be normal. Some women may need them more frequently — your health care provider can tell you how often you should have them. Pap tests are usually a part of a regular pelvic exam. Learn more about Pap tests.
