The birth control pill has many benefits, and one of those benefits is easing menstrual cramps. Since you’re just starting the pill, you may still be experiencing your regular period symptoms, like severe menstrual cramps.
Cramps can be achy and uncomfortable! Here are a few ways you can relieve your cramps:
-
Take over-the-counter pain medicine like ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Always follow the instructions on the bottle and speak with your nurse or doctor before taking pain medication if you have an allergy to aspirin or severe asthma.
-
Exercise regularly.
-
Put a heating pad on your belly or lower back.
-
Take a hot bath.
-
Have an orgasm (by yourself or with a partner).
-
Rest.
Most side effects of the birth control pill go away after 2 or 3 months. You can keep track of any side effects with our app. If you keep having side effects that bother you after using the pill for 3 months, talk with your nurse or doctor about trying another brand of pill or another birth control method.
