I take my pill at 7AM every morning, but on the weekends i will take it on time then go back to bed. is this bad?
It’s not bad at all. It’s actually super impressive that you manage to wake up on time to take your pill. But if you find yourself having a hard time opening your eyes on Saturday or Sunday at 7am (snooze button, anyone?), you may want to switch to an hour when you’re always awake.
With most kinds of birth control pills, called combination pills (meaning it has both progestin and estrogen), it doesn’t matter if you take it at the same time every day, though it’s a really good habit to keep because it helps you remember to take it each day. If you take a combined-hormone pill, you can switch the hour you take your pill whenever you want. You can also switch to taking your pill as soon as you wake up — so that may be 7am Monday-Friday, and 10am on weekends — that’s actually OK too (for a combined-hormone pill).
If you don’t use a combined-hormone pill and instead you use a progestin-only pill, you can switch what time you take it as long as you use a back-up method for 48 hours afterward.
Don’t want to worry about remembering to take a pill every day? There are other birth control methods that are way less work and won’t spoil your weekend mornings. The IUD and the implant are two methods that stay in your body and provide protection from pregnancy for up to several years if you want them to. It’s as easy as making an appointment at your nearest Planned Parenthood health center or another doctor or nurse to get started.
