thinking back now, i can’t believe in thinking this now, but i had protected sex on the day i was ovulating. my boyfriend had told me that his sperm looks like it had leaked through the bottom of the condom. is this possible and if so how likely is it that i’m pregnant???
Yes, sperm can sometimes leak out of the opening of a condom if, for example, your partner leaves the condom on after their erection goes away. If their penis goes soft with the semen still inside the condom, the condom will be loose, and precum and semen can get out, putting you at risk for pregnancy and STDs. Always pull out and take the condom off right after sex (holding the condom on the base of the penis while pulling out), and put a new one on for every new erection.
The only other way sperm (from semen or precum) can leak through a condom is if there’s a hole or tear in it. Here are some things that can make a condom break:
- The condom gets caught on something sharp like your nails or teeth. (Sidenote: Never open condom wrappers with your teeth!)
- Not having enough lubrication. That can cause friction that could make the condom break. Lube is your friend!
- Using oil-based lube (like coconut oil), which can break down the material the condom is made of.
You can use emergency contraception up to 5 days after unprotected sex to avoid getting pregnant. If it’s been longer than 5 days, wait for your next period, and if it doesn’t come then take a pregnancy test.
