FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz – Planned Parenthood Arizona’s Flagstaff Health Center is now offering medication abortion. Two and a half years after ceasing the provision of abortion in Northern Arizona, the organization is grateful to be able to bring back this care to the community.
“In 2011, we said that we would search for physicians to help us fill the need that existed before restrictions went into effect and we did indeed accomplish that goal with our Flagstaff Health Center,” says Bryan Howard, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona.
As the largest nonprofit reproductive health care provider in the state, Planned Parenthood Arizona saw the extreme distances women and their families were traveling to access abortion. Miles of travel, days of wages lost, and nights away from children – all of it faced and overcome, despite the barriers put up by politicians.
“Northern Arizona women who have come to our health center over the last two years have expressed heartache when they learned that abortion was not available in their community. These are the stories that kept us determined,” says Beth Otterstein, WHNP, health care provider with Planned Parenthood Arizona. “We are fortunate to be able to once again serve the needs of women in this community.”
Abortion services resumed at the Flagstaff Health Center during the week of February 3. The health center also provides life-saving cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, annual exams for women and men, vaccines, HIV and pregnancy tests and much more.
