Oregon Planned Parenthood Leaders Welcome Supreme Court Decision in Favor of Mifepristone
For Immediate Release: June 13, 2024
Oregon & Southwest Washington – Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette (PPCW) and Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon (PPSO), the largest providers of sexual and reproductive health care in Oregon and Southwest Washington, welcome news that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of keeping safe and reliable abortion medication mifepristone accessible.
On June 13, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a group of anti-abortion physicians does not have standing to challenge the FDA’s actions related to the approval of mifepristone. Mifepristone will remain on the market and accessible in states like Oregon and Washington where abortion is legal. However, this attack on medication abortion could continue, as the case will be sent back down to federal district court judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who has already allowed the states of Kansas, Missouri, and Idaho to intervene in the case.
Several of Oregon’s Congressional leaders have issued statements of support for the accessibility of mifepristone.
“Today’s decision is good news because it ensures that health care providers, including at Oregon's Planned Parenthood health centers, can keep this safe medication accessible to anyone who needs it,” said Senator Ron Wyden. “It's clear that extremists’ nationwide attacks on reproductive freedom will persist, but I'll keep doing everything in my power to ensure health care providers in Oregon and nationwide can continue to provide quality, accessible reproductive health care."
“I am glad that the Supreme Court ruled to protect access to mifepristone, a safe and reliable medication that has been in use for decades,” said Congresswoman Andrea Salinas. “This decision makes it possible for health care providers in Oregon, including at Planned Parenthood health centers, to continue making this lifesaving medication accessible for those who need it. While I am relieved for today’s decision, it does not change the fact that this same body imposed the harmful decision to overturn Roe 2 years ago and leave millions without any abortion care—medication or otherwise. Our fight continues.”
