Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest Merges With Planned Parenthood of Hawaii
(Seattle) – Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest announced today that an agreement has been signed to merge with Planned Parenthood of Hawaii, creating Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands (PPGNHI). The merger further strengthens the organization’s ability to provide quality sexual and reproductive health care, education and advocacy throughout Hawaii.
In February, the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding and agreed to conduct the due diligence process with the intent to merge. On April 6, Planned Parenthood of Hawaii’s Board of Directors approved the merger.
“For almost 50 years, Planned Parenthood of Hawaii has been the leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care in Hawaii,” said Marjorie Au, PPGNHI board member and former board member of Planned Parenthood of Hawaii. “After much deliberation, we’ve determined that this merger will allow us to grow and thrive in a shifting health care landscape to better meet the needs of the women, men, and teens who depend on Planned Parenthood for care, information and advocacy.”
“We are excited to merge with Planned Parenthood of Hawaii and look forward to working with our Hawaii partners to ensure a seamless transition for health care in Hawaii,” said Chris Charbonneau, CEO of PPGNHI. "Merging together brings value to our patients and new opportunities to our employees because we can centralize functions in all four states and allow staff to focus their efforts on providing continued access to critical reproductive and sexual health care and education.”
The combined organization will operate a total of 28 health centers across Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho and Western Washington. PPGNHI serves more than 90,000 women, men and teens each year with a full range of high-quality sexual and reproductive health care.
The Honolulu Health Center will remain open six days a week – Monday through Saturday and the Maui Health Center will remain open five days a week – Monday through Friday. Patients will soon be able to take advantage of PPGNHI’s online appointment scheduling.
The merger is part of a larger plan to expand access to quality health care for the broader community and to quickly and effectively meet the growing demands for health care services following the Affordable Care Act.
