Planned Parenthood Great Plains Files Writ of Prohibition Requesting Dismissal of Baseless Case Brought by Missouri Attorney General
For Immediate Release: July 25, 2024
Today, Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) filed a writ of prohibition seeking to block Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s baseless case about a fictitious hypothetical patient. This suit is based on a surreptitiously recorded and deceptively edited video created by discredited, extreme anti-abortion actors, depicting an entirely hypothetical scenario involving a fictitious patient.
This filing follows Bailey’s unfounded allegation that PPGP is trafficking minors across state lines for abortions without parental consent. PPGP does not provide any form of transportation directly to patients, regardless of age or location. Furthermore, Bailey is using this case to conduct a fishing expedition into highly sensitive, protected health information of Missouri minors.
Statement from Emily Wales, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Great Plains
“Attorney General Bailey has already admitted this lawsuit is based on a fictitious situation involving an imaginary patient, but it hasn’t stopped him from abusing the legal system to try and get his hands on patients’ personal health information. He is targeting, shaming, and endangering real patients and real Missourians. This isn’t the first time he has used his office to get protected health information, and it won’t be the last time he puts his political ambitions over individuals’ rights. Even a bully’s threats won’t stop us from protecting our patients and their health care options.”
In Missouri, PPGP continues following state and federal laws, proudly providing Missourians with the compassionate sexual and reproductive care that remains available to them in a state with a total abortion ban.
In Kansas, Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Great Plains follows state law requiring that minor patients seeking abortion services have parental consent or complete a judicial bypass process, in which a Kansas judge issues an order authorizing the minor to receive care.
