Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri Urges Representative Yoder, Senators Blunt and Moran, to Protect Care For Over 100,000 Women
For Immediate Release: June 22, 2015
OVERLAND PARK, KS — Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, along with their colleagues at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, urged Kansas Representative Yoder and Senator Moran, as well as Missouri Senator Blunt, to reject a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies 2016 fiscal year funding proposal. The proposal would eliminate the Title X Family Planning program, cutting health care — including family planning services, well-woman exams, lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, and testing and treatments for sexually transmitted infections — that over 100,000 Kansas and Missouri women, including thousands of Planned Parenthood patients, currently rely on. The funding bill would also eliminate nearly all federal funding for teen pregnancy prevention and sex education programs.
“This is politics at its worst. Cutting the Title X Family Planning program could leave over 100,000 people without care, including Kansas and Missouri women in rural communities and low-income women who rely on Planned Parenthood and other providers for high-quality, affordable care. Eliminating this program means these women could no longer have access to family planning services, well-woman exams, lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, and testing and treatments for sexually transmitted infections. Simply put, this bill would take away health care from over 100,000 people in Kansas and Missouri,” said Laura McQuade, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.
Continued McQuade, “It is also outrageous that Congress would gut the nation’s teen pregnancy prevention and sex education programs, just as we’re making historic progress reducing teen pregnancy in Kansas and Missouri as well as nationally.”
“Kansans and Missourians want their elected leaders fixing the economy and creating jobs, not pushing an extreme ideological agenda that would take away health care from women. Representative Yoder and Senators Moran and Blunt must use their power on the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to reject this harmful proposal and protect their constituents.”
Additional Data:
- This would impact nearly 4.6 million people nationally that rely on the Title X Family Planning program.
- Eighty-one percent of American voters support continuing the efforts of the Title X family planning program (link).
- Family planning services yield substantial government savings–$7.09 for every public dollar spent (link).
