World AIDS Day, marked annually on Dec. 1, is a global day of recognition for people living with HIV/AIDS — a time to show them support as well as honor people who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), there are an estimated 38.4 million people living with HIV, but only 28.7 million have access to treatment and about 5.9 million people do not know they are infected. In 2021, 1.5 million people became newly infected with HIV, and 650,000 people died of HIV-related causes.
There have been many scientific advances made in HIV treatment, testing, and understanding of the disease. Despite this, many people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, while stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition.
World AIDS Day is important because it reminds everyone that HIV has not gone away and that we all need to work to increase awareness, fight prejudice, and improve education. We stand in solidarity to put an end to the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS, and we will continue to advocate for all people to have access to vital sexual and reproductive care.
Protect Yourself from HIV
HIV is spread through semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk. Protect yourself by using condoms every time you have sex, and don’t share needles with anyone. You can also ask your doctor about PrEP or PEP to help prevent HIV.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) are two different things. PEP is a short-term treatment for people who’ve already been exposed to HIV and seek treatment within 72 hours of exposure. PrEP is generally an ongoing daily pill or bi-monthly shot for people who may be exposed to HIV in the future.
