Following 6 Week Ban, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio Receives $500,000 Donation from Columbus City Council
Columbus, Ohio — Today, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio received a $500,000 donation from the Columbus City Council General Fund in light of the implementation of a six-week abortion ban that severely limits access to essential health care within the state.
Presented by City Council Member Liz Brown, this donation, coupled with an additional commitment to Abortion Fund of Ohio and the Ohio Womens Alliance, shows the city of Columbus’ commitment to maintaining the fundamental human right of access to reproductive health, including abortion.
Iris Harvey, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, released the following statement:
“With the six-week ban in effect, most Ohioans are now unable to access abortion unless they can afford to travel hundreds of miles out of state, take time off work and arrange child care and transportation. At Planned Parenthood, we have the resources to support patients in getting the care they need and deserve, yet it comes at a cost.
“The City of Columbus making this public commitment, aligned with the majority of Ohioans who support access to abortion, is a testament to the importance of standing up against these dangerous attacks on people’s health and livelihoods in this moment. No person should be forced or denied health care that they need and want or live in fear that their government will turn against them. The city has signaled to its citizens that it trusts the choices that residents make for their lives and will welcome back any person who needs to travel out of state to get the abortion they need.
“No matter what care a patient needs, whether it’s wellness exams, birth control, cancer screenings, STD/STI testing, abortion care in Ohio and beyond, or any of the other services we provide, Ohioans can find it at Planned Parenthood. And that reality remains true in part because of the commitment from the City of Columbus.”
