An annual wellness exam gives you the chance to ask questions or discuss your sexual health with your provider. No question or concern is off limits. This is a great time to check in about your birth control plan, period symptoms, and sexual health. If you are sexually active, we will discuss whether birth control, STI testing or other STI prevention options are right for you. A pelvic exam, Pap smear and breast examination may be included. Other services based on your age and medical history may also be recommended.
Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of birth control methods – from condoms to IUDs to birth control pills - to prevent pregnancy and treat some medical conditions. Birth control is not one size fits all, and we are here to walk you through the options so you can decide what method meets your unique health needs and reproductive life plan. Planned Parenthood provides clinical breast exams as part of your Wellness exam, generally beginning at age 21. Breast cancer screenings, such as breast exams or mammograms, help detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage. In addition to clinical breast exams, we will provide you with mammogram referrals for screenings (at age 40 and after) or to learn more about anything unusual that comes up during your exam. You can also always set a pain/inflammation check appointment at Planned Parenthood if you have concerns about your breast health outside of your Annual Wellness Exam. Cervical cancer screenings (also called Pap smears or Pap tests) can detect cell changes in the cervix before cancer even develops. The changes can be treated, and cancer can be prevented. That is why cervical cancer screenings are so important. We provide cervical cancer screenings during your Annual Wellness Exam. Almost all cervical cancer is caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV), which is why testing for and vaccinating against HPV are also critical ways to protect your cervical health. HIV continues to be a serious threat to the health of Texans. Planned Parenthood offers a range of testing, prevention, and treatment options to protect your health. PrEP and PEP medications help prevent transmission of HIV. PrEP is taken regularly by people who are at high risk for HIV exposure, and PEP is taken after HIV exposure. Rapid HIV testing provides immediate results at your appointment. Individuals who test positive will receive education and long-term treatment referrals and immediate short-term treatment from Planned Parenthood.
Menopause and perimenopausal symptoms are not necessarily the new normal as you age. Hormone replacement therapy can offer relief for hot flashes, vaginal dryness, headaches, and other common menopausal changes. Patients over the age of 40 are welcome at Planned Parenthood for the same expert sexual and reproductive healthcare we provide all our patients, in addition to discussing options for perimenopause and menopause management.
Emergency contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. It can be used up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse.
Pregnancy doesn't happen right after sex. That's why it's possible to prevent pregnancy even after the fact. It can take up to six days for the sperm and egg to meet after having sex. Emergency contraception pills work by keeping a woman's ovary from releasing an egg for longer than usual. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with sperm.
You might have also heard that the morning-after pill causes an abortion. But that's not true. The morning-after pill is not the abortion pill. Emergency contraception is birth control, not abortion. Learn more about emergency contraception.

Getting tested can put your mind at ease and get you (and your partner) needed treatment. It's also important to learn about ways you and your partner can protect yourselves in the future through safer sex. Planned Parenthood offers low-cost flu vaccines and HPV vaccines to protect you against strains of HPV that cause genital warts and cancers of the cervix, genitalia, head, neck, and anus. Flu vaccines are available seasonally and as a walk-in service (no appointment necessary) at all Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas Health Centers.
