Patient Care
Throughout these uncertain times, we know that your health care is essential, time-sensitive, and cannot be delayed. We also know that the devastating impact of Hurricane Laura will become an added barrier to care for some in our service area. Please know that PPGC stands with those who have been affected, and we are here to help: Through September 30, we will offer no-cost birth control, medication refills, and UTI/STI treatment services to all those who qualify. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-230-PLAN.
My PPGC Experience During COVID-19
“I remember my first visit to Planned Parenthood. My experience was so wonderful. It had such an impact on me that, 30-plus years later, I am still a Planned Parenthood patient.
I had my annual exam in July at the New Orleans health center, and I was genuinely impressed by the safety measures in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. After checking in, I was asked to return to my car where I then answered the questions I am normally asked at the start of each visit. When it was time to come in, my nurse practitioner connected with me through video from a separate room. We discussed my visit, including my history and any concerns, before she came into the room for my exam. The experience was super positive, even with the use of technology, and I felt informed and that I received truly great care.
I was expecting to have a Pap test done, but was excited to learn from my nurse practitioner that Pap guidelines had been updated. Because of my age and the fact that my last Pap test was normal and negative for HPV, my next Pap test is not due until five years from my last one. I felt like I won the lottery! While I may not need a Pap test every year, I do still need to come in for my annual check-up.
I love Planned Parenthood because the care I receive is based on the most up-to-date medical information available, backed by science and research. Although I didn’t need a Pap test at this visit, I did still receive a breast exam and discussed my symptoms of menopause – the struggle is real with hot flashes and mood swings! – and we made a plan to address this issue during my visit. I love that my care is collaborative. I felt empowered by my clinician to make decisions about my health care based on the information we discussed.”

In November, there will be a very harmful amendment on the ballot: Amendment 1 would take away the right to abortion in Louisiana. This would make it easier to ban abortions -- without any exceptions. If passed, this extreme amendment would lead to even tougher battles to protect our rights and fight future abortion restrictions. Stay tuned for more information on Amendment 1 from us soon.
We are giving away swag from campaigns including Stand with Black Women, Bans Off My Body, and Shout Your Vote to many of our active volunteers! Find out about upcoming events and how to get involved by reaching out to [email protected].
Education
Planned Parenthood’s Chat/Text Program allows people from all over the world to chat in real time, online and via mobile chat platforms, with Planned Parenthood’s expertly trained sexuality educators. Educators are available seven days a week to answer users’ questions about birth control, STIs, pregnancy, abortion, relationships, and so much more. Aijha, a PPGC Health Educator in Baton Rouge, and Bria, a PPGC Health Educator in New Orleans, were trained in July to assist users in navigating their questions about sexual health. They now correspond with users as part of PPGC’s regular education outreach programming. To chat, simply visit https://www.plannedparenthood.org/online-tools/chat or text “PPNOW” to 774636.
“This program allows us to reach many people that we weren’t able to reach before, especially in rural areas. It allows for easy access to accurate, potentially life-saving information.” – Aijha, Health Educator
