Our providers are experts in the full range of birth control options. We can help you choose the method that is uniquely suited to your life and needs.

TYPES OF IUDs AND IMPLANTS

The Copper IUD (Paragard®) is 100% hormone free, more than 99% effective, and uses copper to prevent pregnancy for up to 12 years.

Hormonal IUDs

The Mirena® and Skyla® IUDs use the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. Mirena® works for up to 8 years. Skyla® works for up to 3 years.

Implants

The birth control implant (Nexplanon®) is a thin, matchstick-sized, plastic rod that is placed under the skin of your upper arm by an advanced practice clinician. It can last up to 5 years.

What is the birth control implant?

The birth control implant (Nexplanon®) is a tiny, thin rod about the size of a matchstick. The implant releases hormones into your body that prevent you from getting pregnant. An advanced practice clinician inserts the implant into your upper arm and that’s it — you’re protected from pregnancy for up to 5 years. It’s get-it-and-forget-it birth control.

Payment and Insurance Options:

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles will not turn away any patient because of an inability to pay.  We accept multiple private insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and for patients who self-pay, fees are based on a sliding scale.  Most often, the patient has either low or no out of pocket costs. Please note, sometimes insurance coverage means covered in part.  Depending on the health plan, patients may owe a deductible or a co-payment, which at times can be expensive. Our team can help patients determine if they are eligible for presumptive Medi-Cal, Family PACT, or grant funded services depending on their unique circumstances.
