Yesterday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The confirmation was a disgrace to our democracy and to the legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. While many are talking about hypothetical future court packing, we’ve seen de facto court packing the past four years. With more than seven months before the 2016 election, Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, was refused even consideration by the U.S. Senate. However the same Senate leadership cynically rushed Barrett’s nomination, less than two months before the election. This act of hypocrisy – a blatant power grab – has led to Barrett’s confirmation being the fastest of any nominee in modern history.
What’s at stake
The established conservative majority on the court threatens some of our most fundamental rights. The Supreme Court will be hearing a case challenging the Affordable Care Act on November 10th that could result in more than 20 million people losing their health insurance. Roe v. Wade’s guarantee of safe and legal abortion, along with access to birth control, has never been more at risk. Cases that jeopardize the rights of same-sex couples and immigrants will be heard this term. Two major election disputes about absentee ballots from battleground states of North Carolina and Pennsylvania are awaiting immediate action by the Supreme Court.
Care. No matter what.
The one thing we know for sure is that your health and your future matter. We’ll be here with you, to provide the care you need now and in the future.
Regardless of who you are, where you come from, or who you love, the right to control your future, your health, and your body should be yours and yours alone.
In solidarity,
