Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee officially begins the Supreme Court nomination hearings today to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
But how much do we really know about the President’s nominee, Amy Coney Barrett? Too much, as it turns out.
On abortion rights, Judge Barrett is an active and vocal threat to reproductive health and rights and has suggested that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided.
- Barrett believes that Roe “created through judicial fiat a framework of abortion on demand” that “ignited a national controversy.”
- She signed a full page newspaper ad opposing abortion. The ad referred to Roe v. Wade’s legacy as “barbaric,” and demanded a return to legislation that prevents abortion.
- Barrett has written that abortion is “always immoral,” and that women who have abortions are “acting with gross unfairness.”
- Since becoming a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Barrett has voted to rehear cases involving abortion restrictions that were previously held to be unconstitutional by other judges.
With 17 abortion-related cases one step away from the Supreme Court, our rights to bodily autonomy are on line.
This week our very own California Senators will take center stage. Led by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, you’ll hear the story of Linda, a nurse from Northern California.
Sen. Feinstein will share Linda’s experience before Roe v. Wade and the lengths medical providers went to, to circumvent the law because it was the right thing to do for their patients. Linda shared, “We know outlawing abortion does not eliminate abortion - it forces abortion underground.”
There can no longer be any doubt: Our reproductive rights are on the line. Call your U.S. Senators and let them know where you stand. They need to hear from you.
