Frederick Health Department Awards Family Planning Contract
Planned Parenthood of Maryland to Provide Family Planning Services
Baltimore, MD, January 28, 2010 – The Frederick County Health Department has awarded Planned Parenthood of Maryland the contract for the provision of family planning and sexually transmitted infections services. The health department stopped seeing patients for these services on December 31, 2009 due to budget cuts.
“We are very honored that they chose us to serve more of the people of Frederick County,” said John W. Nugent, Planned Parenthood of Maryland President & CEO.
Planned Parenthood of Maryland has served the Frederick area for almost 40 years, and opened a Frederick clinic in 1984. Patient services will initially be provided at the existing Planned Parenthood Health Center, located at 1560 Opossumtown Pike, Suite 18, Frederick, MD 21702. Planned Parenthood of Maryland has 60 days to prepare for the increase in patients.
“This contract will more than double the number of clients we serve. By March we will have the capacity to serve everyone with the same high-quality care that we are known for,” Nugent said.
Residents will receive the same services from Planned Parenthood that they did from the county, including: birth control methods and education; annual exams; pregnancy testing and options counseling; sexually transmitted infections testing and treatment; HIV testing and counseling, and colposcopy.
Planned Parenthood of Maryland accepts private insurance plans, Medicaid, and offers a sliding fee scale so that fees are based on people’s income. For appointments, patients can call (301) 662-7171. All services are available for both English and Spanish speakers.
For more than 80 years, Planned Parenthood of Maryland has been a trusted preventive health care provider and the primary source for fact-based sexuality education in the state, serving over 20,000 patients annually at eight Health Centers: Annapolis, Baltimore City, Easton, Frederick, Owings Mills, Salisbury, Towson and Waldorf. Of these patients, 73% are uninsured, underinsured or on Medicaid.
